Calvin and Hobbes - Poster by fauxster Calvin and Hobbes - Poster by fauxster
A simple teaser poster for a "Calvin & Hobbes" film. I think if they made this a traditionally animated movie (and NOT 3D animation or live-action) and a good director and script (bring creator Bill Waterson in?), it would make a lot of people happy and I'm sure would generate a whole new generation of fans that are unfamiliar with the comic strip.

Dream voice cast, anyone?

Personally, I'd have chosen a different shot for the poster...but darned if I wouldn't love this movie.

Voices:
Hobbes: Alan Arkin. Wry, slightly raspy to evoke just a touch of the old Walter Winchell Tigger, good for philosophical introspection.

Susie Derkins: Joey King (maybe). Susie is supposed to be 6-7 y.o., Joey already sounds older and more sophisticated than that. (listening to King interview in the background) She's pretty smart though, maybe could do it.
Second choice: Christina Ricci. She has a litttle-girl voice, just a bit of squeak, it's perfect.

Moe: John Turturro. Yes, Turturro is 55. He's perfect, he can use his regular speaking voice. Him, or Michael Clarke Duncan.

Mom: Laurie Metcalf. Animated moms are voiced by Laurie Metcalf. It's a rule.

Dad: Tony Shalhoub. Somewhere between his Galaxy Quest "Fred Kwan" voice and his "Monk" voice.

Calvin: God only knows.

She was Andy Davis' mom in Toy Story. Lori Alan was Bonnie's mom in Toy Story 3.

IF they were going to make a Calvin and Hobbes movie, I want them to have either all 2-D animated characters, or live-action with Hobbes being 2-D. And Calvin's imagination (Space Man Spiff, and Stupendous Man, and Tracer Bullet) should 2-D animated with only Calvin being a live actor in the sequences.

Hobbes voiced by Sean Connory, definitely...

...well, if he wasn't retired.

I think I once heard that Watterson was too freaked out by the idea of an animated Calvin, since he was scared by how Calvin's voice would sound.

If a movie WAS ever made or if Watterson actually let it happen, I'm sure he would like to be involved in the casting process. :headbang:

Maybe Ricahrd Horvitz for Calvin? But would he be too adult-like?....

Good idea for Horvitz - if they went that direction, I'd hope they'd tweak the pitch of his voice so he doesn't sound so Zim/Billy/Daggett like. :headbang:

Bill Waterson would hate the idea, I read the 10 Anniversary Book, and he hates the idea of Merchansing

I agree, he probably wouldn't want a film to happen. I don't blame him. The same thing kind of happened with "Where the Wild Things Are" - the author was approached often to do a movie but he never thought it would work until Spike Jonez came along... and the critique on that movie is probably about 50/50. :headbang:

I think Hobbes should be voiced by Kevin Spacey. I think he could pull of the smugness of Hobbes tiger superiority while still portraying the innocence of a being who exists solely as the imaginative machinations of a child. Calvin would be hard. I hesitate to say Tara Strong, because--while I love her work--she'd be ever so off. You'd really need somebody who could be sophisticated and naive and curiously enchanted with the world around him all the time. Somebody who can sound like a kid who's imitating an adult.

Dad should be John Stamos. No doubt about it. Just 'cause I like his voice.

I'm not sure who should play Mom, though.

I never thought of Kevin Spacey, that's almost too perfect! Way to think outside the box! Calvin would be difficult to cast; a child actor (unless they're REAL good) would almost certainly have issues with the character scope. Bill Waterson did, at one point, consider making an animated series, you can find an interesting quote from him at the Wikipedia article.

Maybe the kid who played Max in the Where The Wild Things Are Movie could be Calvin's voice.
